Recently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) made a statement, which was viewed as a controversial one by many. I heard a lot of people talk about it, read a lot of material and then felt that the statement which was issued was not as controversial as few of us made it out to be.
The statement implied that women are not well suited for direct combat roles in the IAF, especially in the role of fighter pilot. Well, to me it made no attack on women’s intellectual capabilities. Yes, it’s a fact that a woman’s physiology works against her in many walks of life. So, just to show equality, would it make sense to make an investment, which will not give the desired returns?
If someone asks me, are men and women equal? My answer is, ‘No’, though I am mindful of the fact that my mother and two sisters are women. I feel men and women are unique and should not be compared or contrasted. Comparing them would be like comparing apples and oranges. I am of the opinion, that it is more important to understand the differences between the two sexes and play the role which appropriately fits each one. To support my point, here are two quick examples…
In the game of Tennis, a men’s match can last for five sets, but a women’s match can utmost last for three sets. Would it be apt for women to play five sets, to claim equality? Or, can men look after a one day old infant, like women do? Well, let’s respect nature’s plot. We must acknowledge that men and women have their unique strengths and weaknesses. Why not play roles that suit our respective strengths instead of arguing for non-existent equality and become counterproductive.

Yeah I agree that Men and women are not equal..
It's normal for a woman not to be in IAF, as women have less physical strength. BUT, if the woman not only proves the opposite, but she also proves to be talented for the job, I can't see any reason for her not to be in IAF.
Anyhow, I don't they there would be equality at some point..but yeah that they complement each other perfectly in the right circumstances :)
Well, that's what I have written in my blog. But don't you feel that it's wise to understand limitations (both physical and psychological) from either sexes and work to their respective strengths?
Or do you feel that every role a man plays a women can play equally good or vice versa?
Well I did not say that women can excel in the roles played by men as men do. The point I wanted to drive home is that we regard men/women irrespective of sexes, of being good in certain tailor made roles because over the years/centuries we are accustomed to see them in those roles only. So obviously you will be good in those specific roles if you make your previous generation as your role models which we naturally do. Just the thing is that sometimes being flexible is good and it do help in one's personal growth and also understand the significance of other roles. For example, previously we used to handle our household responsibilities as house wives and never had any inkling of the real life tensions our men folks faced in the work place. But now as we brush our shoulders with them in the workplace as well we are more sympathetic of their tensions and it increased the level of understanding between the genders. So I feel that the thought of being counter productive should not be a deterrent to try out new things in life more so when it may help you grow in life.
